Healthnet office under federal indictment for Medicare fraud

Two brothers associated with the Healthnet Regional Center of Cuba were indicted Monday by a federal grand jury on multiple counts of submitting false reimbursement claims for non-rendered health services to Medicare and MO HealthNet.

Group is refining vision statement for St. James

The Comprehensive Planning Advisory Committee met on March 4 to develop goals for St. James and decide how to best work to achieve those goals as a long-term community development project. Committee members have been working on refining a vision statement that will be recommended to the city as well as deciding what areas in St. James need to be addressed to fully take advantage of all St. James has to offer.

If you read this column in last week’s paper, you probably noticed the following short comment: Why the coroner needs a taxpayer-purchased vehicle is still unclear.

SMS students presenting musical on March 19

“Yo-ho-ho and a bottle of rum!” Pirates and adventure on the high seas are coming to town. Steelville Middle School will present a musical, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson on Friday March 19 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 20 at 4 p.m. Both performances will take place in the SMS Gymnasium. Tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for students or $4 for a family and the entire community is invited to attend.

Leasburg accountant charged with IRS fraud

A Leasburg accountant was indicted on federal tax fraud charges last week. According to the indictment, Angela Basham, proprietor of Poor Man’s Accounting, prepared and filed 23 tax returns between 2004 and 2007, using inflated deductions. Some of the deductions included medical and dental expenses, donations to charities and business expenses.

Lady Tigers reach Elite 8, fall to Webb City

Jordan Bowen threw up a prayer March 3 in Lebanon and it was answered. Her last-second shot found the bottom of the net and the Lady Tigers defeated West Plains 41-40 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class 4 state basketball tournament. The Lady Tigers then lost to Webb City in the quarterfinals on Saturday. (See Photo Gallery)

Dig deeper before making statement

I am writing you in response to your comment in your March 4 “My Thoughts” section of your paper. Specifically your comment about “why the coroner needs a taxpayer purchased vehicle is still unclear.” Well, I would like to clear that up.
