City working to correct problems Print E-mail

In response to the article in last week’s paper, the City of Steelville feels your pain. No one wants to live next door to or even drive by some of these old homes in Steelville, and the building department has new personnel who are working diligently to correct these problem homes in the city, but it is not something that can be done quickly nor easily. There are many steps and legal issues that must be met and the city is working on them.
Currently, there are seven homes the city is trying to get some grant money to help with the cleanup, and the building department is seeking help from Steelville Police Department and the Health Department to get some of these yards cleaned up.
The building department would appreciate any input from the citizens as to what would make their neighborhood better.

I applaude Mr. Thorpes efforts to clean up the city. Forget that alot of these
people are poor people, people who are elderly, have lost their jobs, or are
disabled and simple don't have the money to hire someone to correct the
problems, or the ability to do it themselves. Don't worry about the fact that
they having a roof over their heads may be the only thing going for them. By
all means continue to b**** about them until the city shuts off their water,
their utilities or comdems their home. Let's all do our christian duty during
this holiday season and see how many of these deserving folks we can make
homeless by Christmas. Amen and God bless you all.

Tigers finally fall to Wildcats

When you have a 100-yard rusher, a 200-yard passer and gain a total of 459 yards, all while holding your opponent to 365 total yards, you would expect to win a football game. The St. James Tigers did just that last Friday night in Cuba, but came up on the short end of a 24-12 final. It was the Tigers first ever loss to the Wildcats in 11 years. (See Photo Gallery)

City should be commended for help

I wish to take this opportunity to thank the city council for helping the Tri-County Humane Society Shelter with funding. I personally know how hard it is to keep the no kill shelter operating, since I was on the board there for a long time.
