With their win at Dixon on Jan. 21, the Cuba Wildcats did something they haven’t done in a long time. They entered the holiday break without a loss blemishing their record. “Honestly, it feels pretty good,” said Coach Yancey Temple. “I never would have thought we’d start this well. I know we have a good team, but to say we’d start out 6-0 in December? Nope, never thought that was gonna happen.” To top it all off, the Lady Wildcats have won most of their games in convincing fashion. They beat a good Owensville team in their very first game of the year—and on the road, to boot. They followed that with a blowout at Bourbon to start the conference schedule, three wins at home to take the first place trophy in the Cuba tournament (one of them against a very solid Laquey team), and then last week’s domination on the road at Dixon. “So far, we’ve proven we can win on the road and we can win at home. I’m satisfied with the way we’ve been playing. We have to keep working harder, but this is a talented team with a lot of weapons offensively,” said Temple. Cuba controlled the tempo of the game at Dixon from the opening tip. The Lady Cats got off to a seven point lead at halftime, 29-22, and then blew it open in the second half. They outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-6 in the third quarter and 15-9 in the fourth for a 60-37 final. Kylie Ettinger was the only Wildcat to score in double figures, with 12, but she was just one of nine CHS girls to get her name into the scorebook that night. Kaliann Rikard had nine points—all in the first quarter, Abby Hutson nine, Danielle Watring eight, Amber White eight, Lena Alpough six, Alex Medwick four, Haylee Bess two and Kate Steiger two. The Cuba girls did an even better job of spreading the scoring around at Bourbon on Dec. 7, thanks to an overwhelming lead early on. The Lady Cats led 44-13 at the half and coasted to an easy 73-30 victory, playing mostly subs in the second half. Hutson led the varsity girls with 15 points. Watring and Ettinger both added a dozen. Bess and Alpough scored six each, Alicia Kreter and Erin Swope four each, Morgan Whitaker two, Alex Medwick two, Amber White two, Mariah Montgomery two, Steiger two, Autumn Johnson two and Allie Britton two. UPCOMING GAMES: The varsity girls return to action on Monday, Jan. 4 to host Belle in a varsity-only contest, starting at 6 p.m. The girls are again at home on Thursday, Jan. 7 to play New Haven. Preseason printed schedules mistakenly listed that game as being away.

Five young ladies are competing to become Miss St. James during this year’s Grape and Fall Festival Queen Pageant, which will be held at Wednesday, Sept. 8, at St. James Middle School. Festivities will get under way at 8 p.m.
This week the staff at Three Rivers Publishing is proud to bring readers of the Cuba Free Press, Saint James Press and Steelville Star-Crawford Mirror our annual “Salute to Locally Owned Businesses.”
Steelville residents Richard Korte and Colon “Butch” Moore attended the 58th Annual Governor’s Ham Breakfast at the Missouri State Fair in Sedalia on Aug. 19.
When you have a 100-yard rusher, a 200-yard passer and gain a total of 459 yards, all while holding your opponent to 365 total yards, you would expect to win a football game. The St. James Tigers did just that last Friday night in Cuba, but came up on the short end of a 24-12 final. It was the Tigers first ever loss to the Wildcats in 11 years. (See Photo Gallery)
I wish to take this opportunity to thank the city council for helping the Tri-County Humane Society Shelter with funding. I personally know how hard it is to keep the no kill shelter operating, since I was on the board there for a long time.
