More to the story of Gold Star Boy Ralph Fishwick

The Gold Star Boys mural was painted right after 9/11/2001. It depicts the faces of six young men from the Cuba area who fought in WWII and did not return home to their families. The families received the Gold Star Medal that was given to families who lost a relative to war. The mural was well received and makes quite a presence on Filmore Street, just off Route 66 in Cuba.

Kiwanis Club hosting trivia night fundraiser

On Saturday, February 9, the St. James Kiwanis Club will host its third annual trivia night. Held at the Nelson Hart Park Community Building, the evening will be full of opportunities to win prizes while raising money for the Kiwanis. Teams of eight per table, 35 tables maximum, will handle 10 rounds of rapid-fire questions and visual puzzles.

Outsiders will help choose our new 8th District congressman

We are now officially without a congressman (or congresswoman, if you prefer) following Tuesday’s resignation of Jo Ann Emerson as the 8th Congressional District’s representative. We’ll all get to decide who will replace Emerson at a special June 4 election, but we certainly don’t have much say on which candidates will appear on that ballot. That is not the case, however, for a handful of people, including some who don’t even live in the district.

A Steelville family lost their home and pets to fire last week when a blaze consumed the house located on Patrick Street, just off Keysville Road.

The father of a Crawford County elected official was killed in a farm accident in the northern part of the county near Argo on January 19. Retired pastor Rev. Robert Middleton died after sustaining a head injury.

Tigers had to rally to force overtime before defeating Sullivan to claim championship

The varsity Tigers won the 68th Annual St. James Boys Basketball Tournament championship Saturday night. The top-seeded Tigers defeated the second-seeded Sullivan Eagles 62-55 in overtime. It was the first time the Tigers won their own tournament since 1995, which Head Coach Ben Smith was a member of the team.
