The men and boys of Steelville Presbyterian Church will host their 85th Annual Groundhog Supper on Saturday, February 2nd in Roper Fellowship Hall at the church. All men and boys of the community are welcome to attend.
This year’s guest speakers will be Kevin Bowers and Tom Dixon of Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) from St. Louis. The FCA has been working to get chapters established in rural Missouri, including one at Steelville High School. The first “Ground Hog Social” was held in 1929 to commemorate the completion of a new basement, which was dug out underneath the church with the help of some church boys who had affectionately become know as Rev. Sam Roper’s “ground hogs.” That first supper was open to men and boys only and the menu included groundhog, oyster stew and bean soup with crackers. The male only attendance policy and menu have remained unchanged throughout the years. This year’s dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but there will be an offering taken to benefit the Steelville Food Pantry.
