The Cuba Board of Aldermen met in regular session at city hall on Monday, Nov. 2 to discuss the following items of business.

• City Clerk Christine Nash announced Dec. 1 is the renewal date for long term disability/life insurance coverage for employees. The broker went out for new bids and received two back. Assurant came back with the same rates and no increase. A second bidder came back with the same rate plus a penny. The council agreed to renew with the current provider.

Mayor Kenny Killeen asked if the city should continue to pay 100 percent of the coverage for employees, and Alderman Faye Howard suggested cutting back the coverage for family members.

The issue was tabled and will be discussed at the Nov. 16 meeting.

• The board approved the first reading of Bill #1535 establishing a one-way stop at Fair and McCormick Streets. The second reading will be held Nov. 16.

• The board passed the second reading of Bill #1537 to rezone property at 62 Old Cuba Road from R-1 to C-1.

• The board passed the second reading of Bill #1538 establishing a 15 miles per hour speed limit on Smith Street between School and Northwest Main streets.

Alderman Don Conaway corrected the record to state that when he voted against the bill’s first reading, it was not because he opposed the reduced speed limit zone, as was mistakenly reported in the Cuba Free Press. He voted against it because the bill was amended to shorten the distance of the zone from Orchard Street to Northwest Main. He felt the zone should go the entire length of Smith Street.

Conaway voted in favor of the second reading of the bill, which passed without opposition.

• The first reading of Bill #1539 to amend sections of the city code related to business licenses and fees passed without opposition. The council amended the bill to remove use of the term “decal fee.” The license will continue to cost $35.50 annually and the transfer fee $5.50.

A second reading of the bill is scheduled for Nov. 16.

• Alderman Conaway asked if there was anything going on at the airport (related to the Bond property). Public Works Director Bob Baldwin said all the information has been sent in to MoDOT and an assessment is being made to determine if action should move forward on the Bond property acquisition.

• Alderman Les Murdock reported the sirens were tested and three did not work. The emergency generator is also not working and will be serviced.

• Murdock thanked the two city employees responsible for taking discarded tires to the recycling event. Picking up the abandoned tires around town saved the city $3,000.

• Murdock said a horse trailer has been left at the old recycling center. He wants it put out for bids or sold for scrap metal, since no one has claimed it.

Mayor Killeen stated the trailer is licensed and the police department should find out whose it is before it is sold.

Murdock will report back at the next meeting.

• The mayor said he’d like to discuss budgets with all committees at the next council meeting. He also encouraged voters to go out on election day and cast their ballots.

• Conaway inquired about the grease pit on Northwest Main Street by Frisco’s. Baldwin said that Frisco’s has contacted the company to come pick it up, but they haven’t done so yet.

• In executive session, the council voted 4-1 to hire Nathan Rhoades as a city police officer at starting pay. Alderman Murdock voted no and Alderman Maurice Grant was absent.

• Conaway asked if police officers drive their patrol vehicles home. He was told they do so because they are emergency responders and may have to go out on calls at any time.
