Rural Steelville home was destroyed by fire Print E-mail

Lightning striking a nearby tree is suspected of sparking the electrical fire that destroyed the home of Jim and Patt Sanders on Sunday, July 18. The home on Mincher Road, located southeast of Steelville in the Mark Twain National Forest, is considered a total loss. None of the Sanders family members were injured in the fire.

Free summer labor is being used by city Print E-mail

Samantha Newland, 14, of Steelville, works Monday through Friday in City Hall under supervision of City Clerk Sheila Anderson. When asked what her favorite part of her job was, Newland replied, “I like being around everyone in the office and talking to the people who come in.” She will be a freshman at SHS this fall.

Mayor Terry Palmer announced during the July 19 Steelville City Council meeting that four teenagers were hired to work for the city through the Missouri Career Center at no cost. Over the next 10 weeks, these workers will perform odd jobs and lend much-needed hands to mow grass, file papers, and accelerate the behind-the-scenes work of the city.

Summer may be winding down, but high temperatures and fun activities are keeping employees of the Steelville Pool busy, avid swimmers cool and tan seekers happy. Even with a struggling economy, the pool is averaging high numbers, allowing for more swimming classes, water aerobics, and special events for teens.

Bruce Bailey, Resource Assistant for the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), presented a check for $3,000 to the Steelville Fire Department on July 22 as part of MDC’s Fire Department Matching Grant Program.
