 The St. James Fire District has begun excavating the site for a new fire station. Work has started to level the area, remove trees, and prepare the site for construction. The St. James Fire Department has begun excavating the site for its new fire station on the corner of North Jefferson and Matlock Drive. Crews began leveling the land this week in preparation for construction of the new station, although final station plans are still being reviewed.

Democrat Randy Ver-kamp is currently Presiding Commissioner of the County Commission with his position up for reelection in the August 3 Primary Election. At 60 years of age, Verkamp has been involved in the county for many years and hopes to continue in the tradition that he has set for himself. Verkamp has many key issues that he hopes to bring about if reelected and hopes to continue the success of the County during hard economic times.

Don E. Wilson is seeking to become the Democratic Party’s candidate for presiding commissioner in the Tuesday’s primary election. Wilson hopes to bring new ideas to the county commission, using his work experience to improve roads and reduce road, bridge, and other county maintenance costs. He would also like to increase public participation in the decision-making process of the commission.
