Learn to make jewelry at Firehouse Coffee Shop

The Firehouse Coffee Shop is offering a weekend workshop on Saturday. From 1 until 4 p.m., the art department at John F. Hodge high school will show guests how to make hand-built earrings and recycled products to make jewelry. All proceeds will go to the art department. Share

PTO hosting family movie night

The St. James Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) will present a Family Movie Night on Friday at the elementary school gym. Beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the big gym, the PTO will present Cars 2. The PTO has had great success with movie nights and hope for another large turnout. Share

School to bid on HVAC work

The St. James School District is moving quickly on getting an HVAC contract for the middle school. Creative Construction Solutions representative Lloyd Pooker discussed bidding options with the St. James Board of Education last week and gave a schedule of things to come. Share

School getting faster Internet

St. James schools will be getting better bandwidth following approval of a contract with Charter Internet Service. The contract was a topic of discussion among the St. James Board of Education during their meeting on January 19 and will give the schools a boost from 25 megabytes of service up to 150 megabytes. Council meets to review finer points of new city administrator position

St. James city officials met January 18 to discuss changes that will need to be made to the city code before a city administrator position can be created. Although the workshop was informal, with nothing voted on, alderman did have the opportunity to speak with City Attorney Ed Hoertel about those changes. Share

A highly intoxicated western Gasconade County man who was threatening suicide with a 12-inch steel kitchen knife was subdued early Jan. 11 by a sheriff’s deputy using a Taser device fired twice.

Tenn. chemical company buys St. Louis-based Solutia Inc.
A Missouri based specialty chemicals company has been sold for almost $3.4 billion dollars. Solutia Incorporated of Town and County is being bought by Eastman Chemical Company of Kingsport, Tenn. Solutia’s products are used in the architectural and automotive industries. Solutia shareholders have to approve the deal. Eastman says its paying a 42 percent premium [...]
Kansas City visitor numbers up
Kansas City’s Convention and Visitors Bureau sees another indication that the economy is recovering. The bureau says room demand and revenue for hotels in the metro area has been growing for 22 months in a row. Last year 6.6 million rooms were rented, a new record.
