Pit bull put down after killing neighbor’s dog

A pit bull escaped its home and killed a neighbor’s chihuahua on Christmas Day in Steelville. The chihuahua’s owner, Tim Cassidy, approached Steelville aldermen at their meeting on January 7 to talk about the city’s restrictions on vicious dogs in the hopes of preventing another such tragedy, or one where a person was injured or even killed. Three fatalities, five people injured in accidents this week

A Beaufort man, Derek J. King, 19, and two Union men, James T. Curran, 19, and Cole W. Weddle, 18, were all killed in a traffic accident early Thursday, June 6. Two others suffered serious injuries.

A 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Curran was traveling southbound on Porterford Road near Cardinal Lane, south of Union. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking a culvert and a tree.

Curran and King were pronounced dead at the scene by Franklin County Medical examiner Russell Rost at 2:34 a.m. Weddle died at Mercy Hospital St. Louis at 6:50 a.m.

City, school officials consider shared funding for school resource officer

During a June 5 city budget workshop, Dr. Russ Brock, R-2 School District superintendent, and his replacement for the coming school year, Dr. Chuck Garner, both met with Owensville aldermen to discuss what they called a “cooperative employment” agreement.
