It always helps to get off to a good start. The Cuba Wildcat boys enjoyed a great first quarter at Belle, parlaying it into an 82-45 victory, their 17th win of the season. The boys entered this week still undefeated in conference play and in a prime position to lock down one of the top spots in the upcoming district playoff bracket.

81: That’s the number of points the Cuba Wildcat boys put on the Viburnum High School scoreboard in just three quarters when they visited the Jays for a GVC match last week. To put that into perspective, consider that the Blue Jays had less than half that amount at the end of the third period and you can start to get an idea of the lopsided nature of that contest.

The unbeaten conference streak finally came to an end for the Cuba Lady Wildcats. Until last week, when the Viburnum Lady Jays were able to knock off Cuba 67-62, the Wildcats had not lost to a GVC basketball opponent in over three full seasons. The winning streak had gone on for more than 35 straight conference games.

 TOURNEY CHAMPS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 1995 - The St.?James Tigrs show off the first-place plaque from the St.?James Boys Basketball Tournament, which they won Saturday night after defeating Sullivan 62-55 in overtime. See page 1B for a recap of last week’s tournament. The varsity Tigers won the 68th Annual St. James Boys Basketball Tournament championship Saturday night. The top-seeded Tigers defeated the second-seeded Sullivan Eagles 62-55 in overtime. It was the first time the Tigers won their own tournament since 1995, which Head Coach Ben Smith was a member of the team.

The St. James Middle School Tigers boys’ basketball teams both played two games last week. The eighth-grade Tigers broke even, losing to Sullivan 41-34 on January 15 and defeating Owensville 38-22 on January 17 at their last home game of the season. The seventh grade won both of their games, defeating Sullivan 38-18 and Owensville 44-26.
