An Oak Hill home caught fire last week, resulting in considerable fire, smoke and water damage to one end of the residence; but no one was hurt in the blaze. The home of Patrick Brennan, located at 503 Oak Hill Road, north of Cuba, partially burned on Thursday, Dec. 3. The fire call went out around 10:50 a.m. that morning. The Cuba Fire Department arrived on scene, with support from the Bourbon Fire Department, North Crawford County Ambulance District and Cuba Police Department. According to Doug Shockley of the CFD, the fire was contained to the north end of the house. It consumed two bedrooms and a bathroom area, and also got into the attic. “We pulled up and flames were showing through the roof on the north end of the structure,” said Shockley. “We immediately put our pumper truck into action, with support from Bourbon’s pumper.” The fire was ruled accidental and may have been started by the electrical system. It originated underneath the floor of one of the bedrooms. Because the homeowner typically keeps his bedroom doors closed—and the doors were shut on this particular day—the fire was contained to that side of the house. While it did spread upward, it didn’t spread outward. There was no one home at the time of the fire, but Brennan later showed up on scene after being called from his work site. Volunteer firemen were able to salvage several items from the house (a gun cabinet, mounted deer heads, a flat screen TV), but according to Shockley most of the house avoided major damage.
