Residents in Cuba would rather pay more sales tax than risk having to pay a monthly trash bill. A proposed half-cent sales tax was approved during Tuesday’s special election 55 to 45 percent.

Only 12 percent of Cuba’s 2,474 registered voters turned out at the polls. Out of a total of 301 ballots cast, 166 voters favored the sales tax increase, while 134 were opposed to it.
The half-cent sales tax will be designated for capital improvements for a period of five years. After that time, the tax will expire unless it is reapproved by voters.
The Cuba City Council had threatened to begin charging for residential trash pickup if voters did not approved the sales tax increase.
