Fire inside a Mapleshade neighborhood home caused significant smoke damage Thursday morning, but no one reported injuries stemming from the blaze. ![]() Cuba firefighters shoot water onto a Chestnut Street house fire. The emergency call went out around 9:15 a.m. on Sept. 3, with a report of smoke showing at a residential structure at 3004 Chestnut Lane. Cuba fire, ambulance and police personnel responded to the blaze, later getting support from city employees and other area EMS departments. According to Captain P.J. Myers of the Cuba Fire Department, the entire residence suffered considerable smoke damage, but the fire itself was contained to the kitchen area and utility room. He said the initial call indicated that an evacuation of the home was in progress and when fire personnel reached the scene, everyone had already gotten out of the house and was unhurt. A mother and daughter were reported asleep inside the home when the fire broke out. The Bourbon and Leasburg fire departments lent support on the scene to the Cuba fire trucks in use. Myers said Bourbon and Leasburg came in later to provide relief to Cuba’s firefighters, after the fire had already been extinguished. There were three Cuba trucks on scene. Myers said that had the fire burned just a bit longer, the entire structure might have been lost. “Another five minutes and the outcome would have been much different, because that fire probably gets into the attic and the whole house goes up,” he said.
