A free workshop for families who may face a long nursing home stay for a loved one will be held on Thursday, November 14 at 5:30 p.m. at Golden Echoes. The workshop speaker is C. Brett Barton, an attorney from Columbia who specializes in elder law and who helps families take decisive legal actions to protect their estates and their future.
The workshop will offer the legal steps to consider for those who may currently have a family member in a nursing home, or are considering that option. Topics to be addressed include the biggest mistakes families of nursing home residents make and how to avoid them, why “traditional” estate planning doesn’t work—and what does work, how gifting money to children can disqualify from Medicaid unless it’s done just right, how to possibly qualify for Medicaid without spending down, and a legal document that should probably be in place and the four things it should contain.
