Cardinals soar past Eagles at homecoming

    The Steelville High School varsity boys’ basketball team earned a pair of Gasconade Valley Conference games last week, defeating Viburnum and Vienna. The victory over Vienna came during the SHS homecoming games on Friday.

    The Cardinals traveled to Viburnum on February 10 and earned a sweep over the Blue Jays. The varsity Cards won 59-26 and the JV came home with a 49-24 win.
    It was all Steelville in the varsity game. The Cardinals roared out to an 18-5 lead in the opening quarter and were never challenged by the Jays. Steelville was up 37-15 at the half and led 53-22 at the close of the third quarter before winning by 33.
    Preston Griggs led the Steelville attack with 16 points, while Shawn Ryerson scored 10. Ethan Ruch and Devin Diaz added eight each, Adam Volner six, Colton Mason and Dylan Warden four each and Drew Kennedy three.
    Volner led the team with eight rebounds and six assists. Ryerson had four steals.
    In JV action, Steelville jumped out to a 16-2 lead. The Cards were up 26-5 at the half and led 38-14 after the third quarter. Steelville won the game 49-24.
     The varsity closed out a thrilling homecoming evening last Friday with a 65-57 victory over Vienna. The Cards led the Eagles all night after taking a 19-5 lead in the opening quarters. The Cards were up 38-21 at the half and led 50-31 at the end of the third quarter before winning by eight.
    Three Steelville players were in double figures against the Eagles. Griggs led the way with a game-high 21 points, while Ruch added 18 and Ryerson 13.
    Diaz scored seven and Volner, Caleb Callahan and Kennedy added two each. Griggs had 10 rebounds and Ryerson pulled down seven. Volner had four assists and Ryerson had four steals.
    In the junior varsity game, Steelville fell behind 8-6 in the opening quarter, but managed to gain a 24-21 advantage by the half. The Cards led 39-30 headed into the fourth and won the game 55-34.
    The JV Cards also played in the Bourbon JV Tournament last week, taking consolation. The Cards lost to Bourbon in the opening round, but defeated Viburnum and Owensville in the next two games.
    The seventh-seeded Cards almost pulled an upset in the opening round of the tourney on February 12. The Steelville boys lost to second-seeded Bourbon by just four-points.
    Steelville fell behind the Warhawks 12-7 in the opening quarter, but roared back in the second to lead 20-15 at the half. The Cards fell behind by one points, 24-23, in the third and then went on to lose 39-35.
    In the final two rounds on Saturday, the Cards opened up against Viburnum and cruised to a 57-34 victory. Steelville led 10-6 in the first quarter, 24-18 at the half and 40-24 at the end of the third quarter before winning by 23.
    In the consolation finals, the Cards fell behind Owensville 17-7 in the opening quarter, but again rallied in the second quarter and led 25-24 at the half. The Cards fell behind again in the third, 33-30, but came back in the fourth to win 47-38.
    The Cardinals hosted Bourbon Tuesday night and will close out the regular season at home against Belle on Friday at 6 p.m.
