Plein Air artists are painting Steelville area

Outdoor artists continue to showcase their work this week while participating in the Second Annual Plain Air Painting Festival, sponsored by the Steelville Arts Council. These artists will wrap up their masterpieces on Friday after a public gala on Thursday evening.

These 34 artists from three different states and surrounding areas have forever etched the serenity of this area onto canvas, and anyone can take these scenes home for the right price. All this week, the Steelville Community Building will have these paintings available for view and purchase from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Doors will open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and the artists will not only showcase their Plain Air paintings, but also some of their studio work. Credit cards will be welcome for purchases.
Artists began the weeklong event on Saturday painting on John Fester’s farm in Cook Station, traveled to Keysville on Sunday where the artists dubbed this day as the “Lost Dream Paint,” and set up at Werner Farm on Highway M on Monday. That evening, the artists braved the rain and cool temperatures to capture the sunset at Dillard Mill.
Tuesday, artists gathered for a painting of Maramec Spring and Wednesday painted at Red Bluff in Davisville. Another attempt at a sunset painting will be Wednesday evening on Gary Sanders’ farm, and Thursday will be “Artist’s Choice.”
Each prize-winning painting from the week will be available by auction at the public gala at Meramec Adventure Learning Ranch on Thursday at 6 p.m. The menu includes prime rib with au jus and horseradish sauce and stuffed chicken breast, twice baked potatoes, roasted vegetables, house salad, rolls with butter, and Irish chocolate cake or New York cheesecake. Complimentary wine and beverages are also included. Tickets are $40, available at First Community National Bank, Peoples Bank, Yadkin Creek Mercantile, and online at
Be on the lookout for free raffle tickets throughout Steelville at local businesses. These tickets are available for anyone to have to be entered into a drawing for a $300 oil painting. The drawing will be held Saturday during the gallery’s final day.
