Conservation Commission approves 2015 firearms deer, turkey season dates

    At its regular meeting today in Jefferson City, the Missouri Conservation Commission set dates for the 2015 firearms turkey and deer hunting seasons.

Having winter fun feeding wildlife

    In the winter, I feed everything up here on this wooded ridgetop I call Lightnin’ Ridge. I feed squirrels and birds, deer and turkey, even a fox and bobcat and on occasion…and an eagle that comes up from the river. Only a hundred yards from my office window, there is a little pond and a corn feeder. In the winter, there must be a hundred doves that come to it and down past the pond this year the covey of quail that have numbered from nine to 16 over the past 10 year, is a whopping 25 or so this winter.

Archery - the revival of an ancient sport

    The earliest people known to have used bows and arrows were the ancient Egyptians, who began using the tools at least 5,000 years ago for hunting and warfare purposes. Archery probably dates to the Stone Age, around 20,000 years ago.

This year's deer harvest ahead of 2013

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo.–Hunters checked 9,107 deer during the antlerless portion of Missouri’s firearms deer season, bringing this year’s tally to 194,997.

MDC reports one new case of CWD, found in Adair County

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) reports that one case of chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been found in an adult buck harvested by a hunter in Adair County. This is the first case of the deer disease found in Missouri since early 2013.
