Steelville home destroyed in early morning blaze

    A house on Hickory Street in Steelville was destroyed by fire during the early morning hours of Saturday, November 15. The Steelville Fire Protection District was paged at around 1 a.m. to the first alarm residential call, but was unable to prevent the fire from spreading throughout the structure, causing a total loss.

Steelville schools get good audit report

    “The district came out real well this year,” auditor Joe Leathers told the Steelville School Board at a special meeting held on Monday, November 10 to review the recently completed audit for the fiscal year that ended June 30. “I feel that the district is doing good,” he added. “Everything seems to be going in the right direction.”

Firefighters battle brush fires - PHOTO GALLERY

    Firefighters from all over the region responded to assist the Steelville Fire Protection District on Monday. The SFPD was called out five times, with two of the pages involving brush fires that threatened area residences.

Military service is a big part of the Asher family

    Many families can boast a number of members who have served in the U.S. military, but one local family has 23 at last count. The Bill (William) and Hazel Asher family of Cherryville has three generations of children, grandchildren and two great-grandsons, along with some of their spouses, who have given their time and talent to their country.

City absorbs $40,000 in increased health insurance costs

    City of Steelville employees will continued to have 100 percent of their health insurance plan covered by the municipality, despite an increase in cost of nearly 40 percent. City council members debated whether to ask workers to pay for some of the additional cost, but decided to follow Comptroller Jennifer Basham’s recommendation to fully fund the benefit, at least for the next year.
