Fireman terminated after arrest

    Steelville volunteer firefighter Daniel Jewell was terminated from the Steelville Fire Protection District on Friday, after the board discovered that he had been arrested for alleged child molestation. Jewell, 30, of Steelville, had just recently completed his probationary period with the SFPD, after serving six months with the department.

Domestic violence victims could get more support

    Domestic violence continues to be a problem and the need for assistance to victims is growing in Crawford County. As a result, more funding is needed to provide for the programs that help.

Steelville gets new K-9 unit

    Steelville’s K9 Unit has a new vehicle designed especially for its particular needs, thanks to a grant from CLERF (County Law Enforcement Restitution Fund). The Steelville Police Department was able to purchase a completely outfitted Dodge Durango from the Cuba Police Department, after it decommissioned its K9 unit, through funds obtained from the grant.

Community Building rental fees increased

    The cost to rent the Steelville Community Building will increase after aldermen voted to raise the fees charged at their last council meeting, held on September 15. The decision was made after discussion about ensuring the building was cleaned appropriately between rentals, especially on weekends.
