Homecoming activities scheduled for next week

    This year’s football homecoming will be held on Friday, September 26 as St. James faces St. Clair. Coronation will be held prior to the game, which begins at 7 p.m.

Local youth headed to American Royal

    Colton and Cierra Hamilton have qualified for the 2014 American Royal Invitational Youth Rodeo. The Competition will be held from September 23-26 featuring top student-athletes vying for scholarships and educational awards.

JFH student is Merit scholar

    Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 60th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. St. James student James Schisler was named as one of the students moving on in the scholarship program. These academically talented high school seniors have the chance to compete for scholarships worth about $33 million that will be offered next spring.

Volunteer expert talks to chamber

    St. James Chamber of Commerce members met at the Historic Depot Tuesday to hear from Dr. Karl Burgher, management consultant and economic development specialist with Sunshine Valley Communications, who discussed volunteerism in the community. Burgher has written a free-to-download e-book on ways to encourage volunteerism and keep volunteers focused on projects.

Local women are working to keep elementary kids warm this winter

    Two retired St. James women have started a project producing hats for the preschool and kindergarten classes at the Lucy Wortham James Elementary School. Denise Gordon and Nancy Gorman have been using their crochet skills to produce the hats as part of their own “Hat Project” and hope to extend their production to include first graders as well.
