It was a rough week for the varsity Lady Tigers soccer team last week. The St. James girls fell to Fatima, St. Clair and Southern Boone County.
The varsity St. James baseball team went 1-2 last week, with both losses coming against Four-Rivers Conference opponents. The Tigers fell to Union and St. Clair, but got a win over Newburg.
The St. James Middle School Tigers boys and girls track teams each took first place in boys and girls team competition and earned first-place finishes in 11 individual events at their first meet of the season at the Vienna Junior High Eagle Classic on April 4. The boys finished with 114.5 points, while the girls earned 158. The Tigers competed against 10 other teams.
The St. James High School track teams got off to a great start last week. In the first meet of the season, three school records were broken.
The St. James golf season got delayed a week due to the weather, but the Tigers made up for it with three tournaments and a three-team match last week. The Tigers played in 18-hole tournaments in Union, Salem and Sullivan.
During a banquet on Sunday, Coach Terry Wells and the Lady Tigers basketball teams took time to celebrate their season and recognize all the efforts it took to take the varsity team to the state tournament. Wells thanked everyone including the parents and the ‘”tremendous coaching staff” before getting on to the awards.
Bourbon Middle School track season got under way when the Warhawks traveled to Vienna last Thursday.
High School Track has started and the Warhawks competed at the Rick Buersmeyer Invitational in Fatima on April 2 and a meet at Cuba April 4.
The Bourbon Baseball Warhawks had a busy first week with a game at New Haven on April 3 and the Gasconade Valley Conference tournament in Steelville last Thursday through Saturday. The Hawks finished third in the tourney.
The St. James High School track team went to Union Tuesday and brought home three first-place medals. Shelby Ridenhour placed first in the 100 and the long jump and Mason Ragland placed first in the triple jump.
Tigers varsity baseball defeated Bourbon 5-4 with a walk-off hit by Justin Ray on Monday. The JV took a 4-0 win.
The St. James Golfers hosted their annual Tiger Classic golf tournament Wednesday. The day started off with some lightning and a little rain, but it was only temporary.

The SHS varsity baseball team finished second in the Gasconade Valley Conference tournament, which was held recently in Steelville. They didn’t do as well, however, in a recent conference game at Belle.

The St James Tigers high school track teams competed in Union and Cuba last week. Shelby Ridenhour took first place in five individual events, Mason Ragland took first place in the triple jump, Leslie Perona had a first place in the 3200 and Richard Byfield placed first in hurdles.
Lady Tigers senior basketball player M.J. Buschmann has added another honor to her list this year. Last week she signed with Mineral Area College (MAC) for a full scholarship to play basketball and study geologic engineering. Buschmann considered several other school including Division 1, Division 2 and rival Three Rivers Community college before choosing MAC.
The BHS baseball Warhawks played two away games last week, one at St. James on April 8 and one at Steelville on April 9. The home teams won both games.
The Bourbon High School track team had a busy and successful week last week with a meet at Salem on April 9, Belle on April 11 and Cuba last Friday.
The track season is well under way and the Steelville High School teams competed in two large meets recently, traveling to Salem and Cuba. The teams went to Salem April 9, and competed against 13 other schools. The Steelville girls team finished second overall and the boys finish fourth.
The St. James Tigers varsity baseball has had a busy week. On Monday the Tigers lost to New Haven 3-2. Tuesday St. James lost to Belle at home after the game was relocated due to wet fields in Belle. And Wednesday the Tigers hosted the Pacific Indians and won the game 10-5.
The St. James Middle School track teams brought home two first places from Hermann on Monday, April 15. Quinn Paulus took first in the 1600 and the boys’ relay team with Eric Sims, Ivan Fuhring, Jimmy Snook and Isaac Altis took first in the 4X400 relay.
The John F. Hodge High School golf team traveled to the Helias tournament on Monday, April 15 and played at Pacific April 16. Wet and stormy weather has affected all the spring sports with cancellations and delays and Coach Kevin Conway commented on the effect it has had on the team.
Taylor Thompson looked to be in full control of his pitches in a 6-1 victory over the Steelville Cardinals last week. Thompson got the start for Cuba and went the full seven innings for the win, striking out 11 Cardinals along the way.
Ryan Bouse drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning, as the Cuba Wildcats defeated the Houston Tigers 8-7 at home last week.
Cuba baseball spent last week on the road, after a scheduled home game was moved to Desloge at the last minute due to wet field conditions. But that didn’t deter the varsity Wildcats from their winning ways. Cuba picked up wins against both St. Clair and North County as they moved to a 6-1 record on the season.
The Baseball Warhawks had a week of extremes with one win and one lost last week, making their record 3-5.
The Bourbon Middle School track team had a successful meet at Steelville last Monday.
The Steelville Cardinal baseball team earned a couple nice conference wins recently, defeating Bourbon and Viburnum.
Shelby Ridenhour took three first-place finishes at the Owensville Relays Friday. Ridenhour won the 100, 200 and triple jump. The girls’ team took sixth place overall. The boys placed eleventh out of the 15 teams.
The Steelville Middle School track teams had a nice showing at their home meet April 15. The girls’ team finished in first place and the boys took second.
Troy Parker hit a home run for the Tigers, helping the St. James varsity baseball team defeat the Dutchmen 16-0 in Owensville on Monday, April 22. The Tigers started strong scoring five in the first inning and adding three in the second and third innings. The Tigers didn’t score in the fourth inning but had five more cross the plate to boost the final score.
St. James golfers took fourth in the Four-Rivers Conference Tournament at Birch Creek Golf Course on Monday, April 22. St. James also took fourth in the overall conference.
Emily Perona left St. James and moved on to college and she continues running and setting records. Perona is entered into her first full marathon in May at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) in Mariana, Ind.
The Steelville varsity baseball team has lost their last two games, falling to Grandview and Cuba.
Despite the crazy weather, the Steelville track teams have been able to participate in two meets recently. The teams traveled to Owensville and Vienna.
The Cuba High School varsity Lady Wildcats finished fourth at a 12-team track meet held in Hermann on April 24. The boys came in ninth.
Despite all the rain, the Cuba High School baseball team did manage to get one game played last week. The Wildcats earned a 5-0 victory in Steelville on April 22.
The St. James JV boys’ track team won their first medal meet in over 20 years last week in St. Clair, while the varsity girls shined in Hermann.
The Lady Tigers soccer team got back on the winning track last week as its earned a 10-0 win over Belle. The varsity girls also suffered a 6-2 loss to Mountain View.

In varsity baseball, the Tigers lost a seventh-inning lead to Waynesville to lose the game 11-10 on Monday and got rolled over by Rolla 11-1 on Tuesday.
Earlier this week, St. James runner Dawson Lynch a the new record for the middle school in the 400M and the 4X400 relay with Isaac Altis, Eric Simms and Jimmy Snook. Lynch took first place in the 400M at the Cuba Invitational Monday April 29. He beat the previous middle school record with a time of 55.18 seconds.

With three more wins last week, the Cuba Wildcats baseball team improved to an impressive 12-1 on the 2013 season. Working around the onslaught of spring rainouts this season, the Cats have managed to get their wins whenever the opportunity presents itself. At the time of this story, Cuba had not lost a game since the season opener in the Houston Tournament versus Salem.
The Cuba varsity girls finished in a fourth-place tie with Steelville at the Class 2, District 3 track and field meet held on May 4, with both teams scoring 54 points. The Wildcat boys tallied 58 points and finished sixth as a team. Fatima swept the top spots at the meet.
The St. James varsity baseball team is headed to district tournament this weekend. The fourth-seeded varsity Tigers (8-14) will face off in the first district game against fifth-seeded Osage (4-12) at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sullivan.

Three St. James golfers advanced to sectional play at last week’s district tournament, which was held April 29 at the Sullivan Country Club.
The Steelville Middle School track teams traveled to Cuba on April 29. Both teams faired very well in the small schools division. The boys finished with the most overall points with 149, and the girls finished second, behind only Vienna, with 127 points.
The Steelville Cardinals baseball team hosted St. James on May 1, and couldn’t find enough runs to beat the Tigers, losing 9-5.
Grant Fleming, concluding his final collegiate tennis season at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, will face the #1 seed UCLA Bruins on Friday, May 10, in Westwood, California. UMKC earned its third consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament by once again winning the Summit League Tournament.
Three St. James seniors went to the golf sectionals in Marshfield on May 6. Unfortunately, none will be moving on to the state tournament.
The John F. Hodge High School soccer seniors ended their home season with a win over North County 1-0 on May 9. The JV tied 2-2.
The 8th Annual Wildcat Classic Baseball Tournament will take place this weekend at the Cuba Sports Complex, with the proceeds from the tournament going to the Cuba Ball Program and the Knights of Columbus Sports Field Fund.
On senior night, Thursday, May 9, the Varsity Tigers baseball team defeated Crocker 14-5 to send the senior boys home on a positive note.
In the Class 4, District 9 baseball tournament Saturday in Sullivan, St. James defeated Osage 8-5 and move on to play Sullivan Monday at 4:00 p.m. The Tigers are 10-14, the Eagles 17-6.
