City responds to pair of utility emergencies on Monday
City workers certainly felt the Monday Blues this week, as they clocked over 30 hours of cumulative overtime in utility repairs in that one day, due to a pair of unexpected emergencies.
Argument over a beer leads to shooting
A Steelville man has been charged with class A felony assault in the first degree after shooting another man on November 30. Michael Dennis Hartman, 44, admitted to shooting James Marty after an argument over a beer. Class A felonies hold a potential sentence of 10 to 30 years in prison if he is found guilty of the crime.
Filing begins soon for April election
Filing will begin this month for those interested in serving on local boards in the Steelville community or as officials within the city of Steelville. General Municipal Election Day will be on Tuesday, April 8, and voters will go to the polls to fill a number of positions on these governing bodies.
Father arrested for making fake Facebook threats, original suspect released
Further investigation into the case of Facebook threats against a Steelville High School student has led to a new arrest, and the withdrawal of charges against the initial suspect. The new suspect in the case is the original victim’s father.
Local firemen have busy holiday week
Steelville volunteer firefighters have been paged out to respond to at least 13 calls in the past week, including four residential fires and one that required a rescue effort. Steelville Fire Protection District Captain Joe Smart reported that only one of the fires is currently under investigation by the fire marshal.
