Smallmouth bass and terrapins

Bass season opens on Ozark Rivers this week, and some of them will absolutely be choked with kayakers, canoeists, and vehicle campers at access points.  Weekend holidays are terrible times to be on the rivers, so on the Memorial Day weekend, I will be home working on the garden.  It hurts too much to see what those people from the cities will do to our rivers, the drugs and alcohol and the litter on gravel bars.

Ornithologizing and such

    People who are certified bird watchers keep lists of all the birds they have seen in their life. They wear short pants and funny looking hats and use names like Coccyzus Americanus and Mimus Polyglottos. The first is a rain crow, or yellow-billed cuckoo, and the latter is a mockingbird.

Squirrel, black-bass seasons open May 24

Memorial Day is an even bigger deal for hunters and anglers than it is for other Missourians. That is the weekend when squirrel season opens and anglers can keep legal-sized black bass in most southern Missouri streams.
