Foundation makes $5,000 in local grants

    The Community Foundation of Steelville authorized a total of $5,000 in grants to six non-profit organizations in 2013. Recipients of the funds included the South Central Missouri Literary Council, the Steelville Arts Council, Eagle Flight Ministries, the Steelville Ministerial Alliance/Food Pantry, the Community Child Care Center, and Gibbs Care Center and Manor.

Art evening scheduled

    Community members are invited to participate in a Steelville Schools Art Night on Friday, March 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Everyone is invited to come to the old middle school building to see and create art.

SFPD kept busy with brush fires

    Saturday was a busy day for the Steelville Fire Protection District as fire personnel were called on to fight five natural cover fires in the area. One call was to assist Salem, but the other four were within the Steelville district.

Police officer building relationships at Steelville school

    Steelville Middle School students stop on their way through the cafeteria between classes to say, “Hi Adam,” to Steelville Police Sergeant Adam Reed. He returns the greeting, and asks them about their day, what class they’re going to next, what they’ve been doing. Reed spends several hours at the middle school each Friday, eating lunch with students, visiting classrooms, and talking with kids about all kinds of things from baseball cards to bullying. It’s all part of a process to create a relationship between himself as a law enforcement officer and the students.

Kindergarten information Day planned

    Kindergarten Information Day will be held Thursday, March 13, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Steelville Elementary School for parents of students who will turn five before August 1.
