Gardeners halfway to restoring glade in St. James City Park

    Members of a Master Naturalist Class spent November 1 restoring a glade in the St. James City Park. The class has chosen the glade for a volunteer project and hopes to restore the seven acres and create a maintenance plan ready to keep the glade in good condition.

Author will sign books during sale at library

    The James Memorial Public Library will be hosting a book sale and book signing this weekend. Friends of the Library will have thousands of titles for purchase in both hardback and paperback as well as CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes for sale and author Ellen Alexander will be in the Children’s Reading Room on Saturday signing copies of her children’s book “The Secret of Dinswood.”


Council asked to reconsider cows and chickens within the city limits

    Deb Parton and Quincy Berlin spoke to the St. James City Council Monday night about allowing horses and chickens in the city limits for those residents with yards large enough to support them. The council had previously rejected the idea, stating concerns about animals getting loose and how enforcement would be handled. Parton and Berlin asked why no further discussion was held on the subject.

City taking health insurance rate hit, officials expect even higher prices coming in 2015

    Sheran Ashby, of Ashby Covenant Insurance, spoke to the St. James City Council about options for health insurance renewal on Monday night. Insurance costs will increase nearly 20 percent this year, but an even larger increase is expected next year as the city will be required to move to a plan that is part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Veterans Home resident was a WWII bomber repairman

    William “Bill” Aaron is a former officer in the United States Air Force, serving during World War II. Aaron spent the majority of his time serving in Italy, working on as crew chief on B-24s that were used for bombing during the war.
