City of Cuba Natural Gas Department
Like all forms of energy and many other products found in the home, natural gas has the potential to do damage.
The proper use of natural gas is important for your safety and to provide maximum benefit from your appliance.

Prevention
The following is a list of guidelines you may use to help reduce the risk of a possible accident.
  1.  Use appliances and equipment designed to meet National Safety standards. Those
certified by the American Gas Association carry the Blue Star seal.
  2.  Make sure appliances are properly installed, incuding vents, if required, and adjusted
         for proper operation.
  3.  Follow the manufacturer's instructions for operation and care of the equipment.
  4.  Use the proper appliance for the job. An oven is not a space heater.
  5.  Use properly trained professionals for installation and repair of equipment.
  6.  Have the appliance serviced periodically. Have the flues and vents checked annually.
  7.  Keep curtains and other combustible material away from open flames and heated
surfaces. Flammable liquids such as gasoline, lighter fluid, cleaning fluid, paint,
lacquer, thinner, etc., should be stored in an area where there is no open flame such
         as a burner or pilot.
  8.  Have approved fire extinguishers handy and know how to use them.
  9.  Children should be taught how to turn gas on and off properly. Young children
should be taught not to play with, or attempt to operate the appliance.
  10.  If manual lighting of the appliance is required, always light the match first and hold
it at the point of ignition before you turn on the gas.
  11.  Keep burner surfaces free of dirt, match ends, grease, etc.
  12.  If the flame goes out the gas should be turned off at the appliance. Allow time for
possible gas accumulation to escape before relighting. If trouble repeats, turn off the
gas and call your service agency.
How to detect Natural Gas
Smell- Natural gas sold by the City of Cuba Natural Gas Department has a distinctive odor added so that less than 0.9% of gas in the air may be detected.
Sight- You can see the flame in most appliances. Check the flame to see if it is burning properly. The flame should be blue with no smoke.
Sound- If the flame seems unusually noisy, it may not be burning properly and should be checked.
What to do if Gas is Detected
First- If you suspect a gas leak, DO NOT strike a match or operate an electric light switch or other electric appliance. DO NOT attempt to start a car or other internal combustion engine in a garage where you suspect uncontrolled gas. Never light a gas appliance if the odor of gas is present.
Second- Ventilate the building by opening the windows and doors.
Third- If odor persists, call for help from the gas department. If the odor is extremely strong, evacuate the residence immediately; then go to a neighbor and call the Gas Department.
Fourth- Shut off the main valve if you know where it is and can do so safely.
Fifth- After the source of the escaping gas has been located and repaired, call the Gas Department to turn the gas back on and have a qualified person relight all appliances.
