St. James Parks & Recreation to offer a variety of new recreation programs in January

    The St. James Parks & Recreation Department will start off the new year with a variety of new recreation programs for all ages.


Little Tigers Basketball (Ages 3-5)
    This six-week program is designed to teach young girls and boys some basic fundamentals of basketball. Drills and lead up games will be used to teach dribbling, passing and shooting. Emphasis on basic instruction, participation, sportsmanship and fun.
    Little Tykes Basketball is for children ages 3-5 years. The program will be held from 10-10:45 a.m. at the Rec Center Saturdays, January 12-February 22. The enrollment fee is $25 and the deadline to register is Monday, January 13. Registration is limited and the program will fill fast.

Candy Construction (Ages 9-13)
    Come learn to build edible race cars, castles and other cool stuff out of candy. This six-week program is for children ages 9-13 and will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, January 14-February 18 at the Scout Lodge. The enrollment fee is $35 and the deadline to register is Tuesday, January 7. Space is limited.

Jr. Hoop Basketball (Ages 6-8)
    This six-week instructional basketball program is for girls and boys ages 6-8. Children will learn the basic fundamentals of basketball and instructors will start incorporating the rules of the game. Players will learn to work together as a team during scrimmages each week. There will be an emphasis on good sportsmanship, too.
    The program will be held from 11 a.m.-noon at the Rec Center Saturdays, January 12-February 22. The enrollment fee is $30 and the deadline to register is Monday, January 13. Space is limited.

Stitch It Together (Ages 5-12)
    If you can sew, you can do basic things like attach a button, fix a hem, or repair a tear. You can also learn to make clothes and even costumes for plays. It’s also fun to learn a new skill. In this class, children will learn basic sewing skill by creating an animal sewing card, a button collage and so much more.
    The program will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, January 18 at the Scout Lodge. This is a ONE-DAY program. The registration fee is $25 and the deadline to register is Monday, January 13.

Paper Mache’ Mania (Ages 6-14)
    Discover how easy and fun it is to create works of art using Paper Mache. Participants will be able to make their very own masterpiece. Everything you need to create Paper Mache’ masterpieces is lying around your home right now, both in the recycling bin and the kitchen cupboards. In this class you will learn how to turn everyday materials into cool pieces of art!
    This six-week program will be held Saturdays, January 18-February 22 and is offered to children ages 6-14. Children ages 6-9 will meet from 10-11 a.m. and the 11 a.m.-noon session will be for youth ages 10-14. The fee is $30 per child and the deadline to register is Tuesday, January 12.

Adult Coed Volleyball League (Ages 16 & Older)
    Our recreation leagues are designed for those adults who love to play volleyball or are still learning to play but don’t have the experience or skill to play at a highly competitive level. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of 7 games and doubleheaders could be played depending on the number of teams.
    This six-week league will be held Sundays, January 12-February 16. The entry fee is $150, and the registration deadline is Monday, January 6.

Adult Coed 4 v 4 Indoor Soccer League (Ages 16 & Older)
    Participating in an adult’s sports league offers the opportunity to get some exercise, socialize, and feed a healthy sense of competitiveness! Teams consist of 4-6 players. Maximum of two men on the court at one time. Teams are guaranteed a minimum of 6 games and could play doubleheaders each week.     The 6-week coed 4 v 4 indoor soccer leagues starts Sunday, January 12 and ends February 16. The team entry fee is $100 and the deadline to register is Monday, January 6. All matches will be played Sunday afternoons at the Rec Center.

Adult Coed Dodgeball Leagues (Ages 16 & Older)
    This is your chance to become “old school” once again by playing the game where you are the target. Coed leagues will be played Wednesday nights. Games are played 6 on 6 with a maximum of 10 players per roster. Matches are best 3 out of 5 games. This six-week league will be held Wednesday, January 15-February 19. The entry fee is $100 and the deadline to enter is Wednesday, January 8.
