Steelville High School will celebrate Homecoming on Friday, January 17. The boys basketball teams will play St. James, with games beginning at 6 p.m., and coronation of the king and queen will take place between the JV and varsity games.
Candidates for SHS Homecoming king and queen this year are seniors Seth Barton and Madison Housewright, juniors Levi Gray and Laine Cottrell, sophomores Sophie Case and Tyler Davis, and freshmen Courtney Diaz and Kyle Killeen.
SHS Student Council President Rylee Mabe and Student Council President-Elect Grace Bair will serve as masters of ceremony for the evening. The prince and princess will be Elaina Turnbough and Merl Vetter. The theme for SHS Homecoming 2020 is "Around the World."
Leading up to the event, students are encouraged to participate in the following school spirit dress-up days: Monday—Dreamer Day (wear school-appropriate pajamas), Tuesday—World Traveler Day (dress as a tourist), Wednesday—Salad Dressing Day (examples: Ranch - dress as a rancher, Italian - dress as someone from Italy, Thousand Island - dress as someone from an island), Thursday—Dynamic Duo (examples: Mario and Luigi, Batman and Robin), Friday—Red and White Day.
The high school has a new gravel parking lot for overflow parking, which will help with the larger crowd of people in attendance for the annual event. Superintendent Mike Whittaker noted the additional parking area had been installed after some traffic issues at a basketball game earlier this season. The district added about 50 parking spots, with at least 30 of those south of the parking lot located closest to the ag building. There are also about 10 to 12 more parking spots in the north lot, and the same number in the field behind the school. Whittaker noted many more can be parked in the field if there isn’t rain.
