The St. James High School volleyball team successfully opened its season by sweeping past Salem 25-16, 25-18, 25-17 Tuesday, Sept. 1 at Salem High School.
This year the Missouri State High School Activities Association has changed high school volleyball varsity matches to best-of-five sets.
For St. James senior Makayla Case had 11 kills, five digs and nine serve-receives, while senior Hannah Marcee had five kills, two aces, one block, six digs and 13 serve-receives; senior Mackenna Rodgers three kills, one ace, two blocks, six digs and 16 assists; senior Shelby Marcee six kills; two aces and two blocks; senior Emma Carroll six digs and seven serve-receives; junior Allana Chitwood one ace, four digs and three serve-receives, and sophomore Rylee Hancock seven assists and five digs.
St. James’ junior varsity squad won in three games, 25-22, 8-25, 15-13.
“Varsity had a good showing for our season-opener,” said STJ head coach Julie Guese. “Almost everyone showed some nerves, which caused some timing issues. But that is something we can work on. We were proud of their effort and excitement, and we were just thankful to get to play.”
This week the Lady Tigers were scheduled to host Rolla Tuesday and Bourbon Thursday at the St. James Middle School gym.
