For the second time in three years—and just the second time in school history—the Steelville High School Lady Cardinals basketball team has won a district championship. The SHS girls took the crown in Herculaneum Friday night with a 46-28 victory over Grandview in the Class 3 District 3 title game.
The Steelville High School boys basketball team and their fans celebrated an apparent Class 3 District 3 tournament championship at Herculaneum Friday night, but the party was dashed after the three referees officiating the game met at half court and waived off the final shot that would have given the win to the Cardinals. Instead, St. Pius X fans stormed the floor after it was determined the Lancers held on for a 45-44 victory.
The Steelville High School boys and girls basketball teams will both be playing for a district championship on Friday. The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals each entered the Class 3 District 3 tourney, which is being held in Herculaneum this week, as the number-one seeds.
