The St. James Board of Education heard from Superintendent Dr. Merlyn Johnson, who gave an update on budget assumptions for the next school year during a meeting on Thursday, May 21. Johnson told the board there is a lot of uncertainty due to the lack of information on what the state budget will look like, but expects cuts to be made that will impact the district.

St. James school librarians will be hosting a book give away event on June 3 for students as they enter the summer months. The event will be held in the Lucy Wortham James Elementary School parking lot from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Phelps County Bank (PCB) has again given a grant of $6,000 to the St. James School District to be used for classroom needs. As part of a School-Business Partnership, PCB gives money annually to help give teachers additional funds for classroom projects, field trips, and to help with other costs.
The St. James Board of Education heard a reopening strategy from school safety coordinator Josh Cahill during the May 21 meeting of the board. He highlighted how the district could be impacted by COVID-19 while it attempts to bring students back to the buildings.
Emily Douglas had a photo selected for the Phelps County Extension webpage during a photography contest held recently. Douglas is 14 years old, a member of the Royal 4-H Club in St. James and has been enrolled in photography for five years. Extension staff chose her photo from the 29 photos that were submitted.
